This and That for Wednesday
~~~ I recall one day when as a young man there was a neighborhood bully who had me changing my route from school to home because he told me he was "going to beat me up." For weeks I avoided many places in my neighborhood to steer clear of this bully. Finally one day the bully cornered me and acted in a very aggressive way. I recall to this day how nervous I was but I resigned myself to standing my ground.
When I encountered Mr. Bully he shouted at me and acted as though he owned the sidewalk I was on. I refused to listen to him, an act which seemed to further anger him. His tone of voice became more and more threatening.
Mr. Bully was a couple of years older than me. My memory says I was twelve at the time and he was fourteen. That is a big age difference as boys.
As I girded myself to get a good whipping it was clear my best chance to get a punch in. I would need to be the aggressor. As I approached him, my inclination was to cross the street to avoid him but his tone told me he would chase me down so I resigned myself to take the initiative. He continued his bellicose manner and when we were a short distance from one another I took a quick step in his direction and let lose with a punch which landed squarely on his nose. A trace of blood appeared almost immediately. As I braced for him to hit me he grabbed his face and he then ran away crying like a baby in need of a diaper change.
I learned a lesson that day. Turning the your cheek only leads to the need to turn the other cheek as well; it's a policy which leads to more abuse.
The parallel I draw from that experience is what we are now confronting as a nation versus Iran.
The USA has always stood strong in the face of adversity. We must stand up for our-selves and never cower in the face of. To offer the other cheek is an inducement to becoming a victim.
We have a strong military to deter aggressor nations from attacking us. The Japanese would never have attacked Pearl Harbor if they thought the American Giant would return to completely destroy their military. Keep in mind in the case of both Germany and Japan, we gained unconditional surrenders. Neither nation has been an aggressor since. As a matter of fact two of our most reliable allies have been those two former enemies.
That bully of over fifty-five years ago has been a good acquaintance for a long time since then.
The moral of all this is to do the right thing.
~~~ Filmmaker Sean Stone, son of Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone, converted to Islam on Tuesday in Iran, where he is making a documentary, he told AFP:
"The conversion to Islam is not abandoning Christianity or Judaism, which I was born with. It means I have accepted Mohammad and other prophets," he said in a brief telephone call from the central Iranian city of Isfahan, where he underwent the ceremony.
Sean Stone's famous father is Jewish, while his mother is Christian.
The 27-year-old filmmaker did not say why he converted.
