One more hurdle......

Representative Phil Travis

Governor Happiness stuck his nose in the gay marriage amendment debate and now he has a bloody nose on his inauguration day. The majority of legislators said they should do the constitutionally mandated thing and entertain a vote on the amendment rather than adjourn without a vote. It was a simple matter, the constitution required it and the state's supreme court, on a unanimous vote of 7-0 said so.

Would someone please pass the mustard, I have some crow to eat. Yesterday in this space I said Senate President Robert Travaglini would be involved in an effort to bury the proposal without a vote. Not only did he stand aside and not interfere with the vote, he was among those voting yes to place the matter on the ballot.

In the meantime my representative and senator voted against the amendment. Represerntative David Sullivan and Senator Joan Menard both voted no. Long time Fall River representative Bob Correia voted yes. Another representative, Michael Rodrigues, part of whose district includes Fall River, voted no.

The next round of the battle should come this Spring or next Spring where a vote of 51 will again be needed to place the measure on the 2008 ballot.

A tip of the cap to Represenbtative Phil Travis of Rehoboth who led this battle. This was his last act as a representative since he is retiring after 24 years representing his district well.

I had an encounter with Phil before he became a representative. He was manager of the Somerset branch of the the First Federal bank where I was a customer. I had known him only by sight until the Friday night I had stopped in to cash my paycheck (yes, banks had evening hours then, no ATMs). I had made it just "under the wire" before the bank closed. Phil was at the door with the keys to lock the door. He waited until I came in to shut the outside sign light and lock the door. It was a very wet night with a cold Northeast wind blowing up the Taunton River.

After I completed my business at the counter he unlocked the doors to permit me to leave. When I tried to start my car the battery was dead. Phil saw I was in difficulty. He donned a yellow fisherman's slicker and came to my assistance. He drove his car besides mine and jumped my battery. Thankfully my car started.

The future representative could have simply called road service for me, but that's not the type of man he was or is. He grew up in farm territory where people help others in distress.

I suspect Phil Travis barely recalls what he did for me that rain swept night because I bet he's done it many times.

Phil, all the best to you in your retirement and thanks for the good years of representation.
